Real Life Maths Exploration

Students have been learning about maths in a real life setting.

Year 12 students have been building on their knowledge and understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem.

They took a trip to Central to model the Hong Kong Observation Wheel. Looking at a Ferris wheel is a classic maths problem. Not only did the visit allow students to apprehend the problem in real-life context, but it also gave them inspiration for their internal assessment - a mathematical exploration.

It’s always beneficial to take learning outside the classroom and the students enjoyed thinking creatively and solving authentic mathematical problems.

Maths is all around us and whether it is inside or outside the classroom, it is important that students make maths discoveries so that they can appreciate the power of the subject.
